Vaccine - Vaccination Mandate

Vaccine – Vaccination Mandate

  • Do we require in-person students to be vaccinated? If not, how is it planned that their health status each day they come on campus is monitored to ensure that they do not represent a health concern and compromise safety?
    • The District is not currently mandating vaccination to attend in-person classes. Students will complete an on-line Canvas quiz or other symptom screening each day prior to coming to campus to ensure they are not symptomatic on the day of the class. Masks and social distancing will be enforced indoors on campus for the upcoming semester (June 4, 2021).
  • When will vaccination be available for young children? I have a baby and a toddler.
    • Based upon best available information, vaccinations for ages 9 thru 12 are expected to be approved in fall 2021 (likely September). Ages 2 and up may be authorized following the other approvals.
  • Will there be opportunity for weekly vaccinations for students and employees?
    • Yes, both College Health Clinics will offer vaccinations on site on specific days for each campus, check the campus websites for updates on dates and times.
  • One of the concerns heard from front line Classified Professionals in Student Services is even if they are vaccinated, they do not know the vaccinated status of the students and public that come in for assistance.  What kind of reassurance can you provide about their safety should someone come in and be CV19 positive?
    • During any indoor interaction with members of the general public, everyone should wear a mask. The risk of a vaccinated person getting a significant viral exposure in the setting of masking is less than 0.03%.
  • If someone is in a building and isn't wearing a mask, what guarantee does everyone who sees that person have that they are vaccinated?
    • Face coverings will be required under the current Cal-OSHA guidelines until further notice inside all buildings. Outside, face coverings will be required of unvaccinated people when social distancing cannot be maintained.
  • The explanation given to me at a recent team meeting said that community colleges cannot require the vaccine because they want to be as inclusive as possible. Is this still applicable during a public health crisis?
    • Vaccination requirements are a local community college Board of Trustees decision, this is still in place during public health emergencies.
  • What are the plans for accommodating employees who refuse the vaccine and/or employees who feel uncomfortable being in an enclosed space with unvaccinated individuals for long periods of time multiple times per week?
    • Vaccinated people are protected by their vaccine, even if others are unvaccinated.  Unvaccinated people are offered KN95 or N95 level masks for their own protection.  This level of protection is adequate even for healthcare workers taking care of patients at peak infection.  Updated Cal-OSHA temporary emergency standards give the option of this high level of masking for unvaccinated individuals.
  • What considerations or accommodations will be made for employees who have serious underlying health conditions that make being among unvaccinated people a personal health and safety risk?  [I am fully vaccinated)
    • Individual accommodations can be made in consultation with Human Resources and your immediate supervisor in accordance with existing District policy.
  • In Alameda, ~75% of the population over 16 y.o. have received one vaccine shot. How many have received both shots, and what may the repercussions be if people do not follow through with the second shot?
    • Now Alameda County has reached greater than 77% of at least one dose in ages 12 and up.  Most are getting their second doses as well.  1 shot is 82% effective, protection increases to 94% after the 2nd shot, and risk of serious illness falls to near zero.
  • Will there be a vaccine mandate on our campus like CSUs?
    • Vaccination requirements are a local community college Board of Trustees decision. This is still in place during public health emergencies.
  • While vaccination appears to be highly effective, we do not know how long the protection lasts. How will that issue be addressed?
    • Protection lasts at least one year. The District will continue to follow and communicate recommendations from Public Health authorities to all employees when and if booster shots are required.
  • Will our health center provide vaccines to students who want them?
    • Campus Health Centers have scheduled vaccination clinics and testing capability for students and employees who have chosen to be vaccinated at no cost to the student or employee.
  • Will the Vaccine be mandatory for all Faculty, Staff and Students of Chabot-Las Positas Community College District?
    • Not at this time.
  • You talked about the guidelines becoming crystal clear over the summer--do you anticipate that Cal OSHA will require masks for the unvaccinated in the workplace but allow no mask use for vaccinated people? Whatever the decision, it would be helpful to have it early so that students have an opportunity to get the vaccine in time for in-person classes if they are hesitant but decide that it's in their best interest given guidance.
    • Based upon Cal-OSHA extension of the emergency temporary standards on June 3, 2021, masks will be required indoors in mixed vaccinated and unvaccinated populations. The assumption is that masks are required in the classroom as the vaccination status of all individuals will not be known.
  • What is the research saying about the vaccines' effectiveness against the new variants from India? I see some health officials saying they are "confident" that the vaccine will be effective, but I don't see any results of studies yet. Do you have any information about this?
    • We encourage you to speak with your healthcare provider to learn about this from your trusted medical source.
  • When are Classified Professionals in Student Services expected to provide in-person services? Can we work with our supervisor to request a hybrid schedule until Spring 2022?
    • Yes, please work with your supervisor regarding your work schedule.
  • Has the District considered offering free vaccinations at the 2 campuses?
    • Both campus student health centers are engaged in free vaccination clinics on campus for a number of days during the summer and fall semester.
  • Will the 2 vaccinations need a third shot?
    • We urge you to speak with your healthcare provider or monitor trusted medical sources.
  • Are there any additional or different precautions and steps being implemented/outlined for those folks who are vaccinated but still have family members at home that are in the high-risk category and are not vaccinated and cannot be vaccinated at this time?
    • We urge you to speak with your healthcare provider to learn what measures will work for you and your family.
  • Given that vaccinated individuals have a very low rate of transmitting anyway, are there special precautions that vaccinated individuals should be taking to prevent transmission to their unvaccinated children who are not yet eligible to be vaccinated (those under the age of 12)?
    • We urge you to speak with your healthcare provider to learn what measures will work for you and your family.
  • Regarding children under 5 who have not been vaccinated, are they carriers, transmitters, and/or more susceptible to infection from those not vaccinated?
    • We urge you to speak with your healthcare provider to learn what measures will work for you and your family.
