March 5, 2020 FAQs:

What is a Coronavirus?

The word “Coronavirus” refers to an entire family of viruses, and the current virus causing concern worldwide is just the latest version. Previously we have seen outbreaks of other versions like SARS and MERS. The current virus is causing the disease referred to as “COVID 19”.

The terms “epidemic” and “pandemic” have been heard a lot lately. What’s the difference?

An epidemic is an outbreak of a disease that is regional in nature that may spread from one community to another. A pandemic is an outbreak that is global. “Community Spread” is a key factor in analyzing pandemics because once a new (novel) virus is introduced into a population the question to be answered is whether it will be spread from human to human or not. With COVID 19 we are experiencing community spread.

Are there any plans to cancel sporting events, concerts, theatrical events, or any other kinds of events because of COVID 19?

No. Under the current statewide tier system we are limiting scheduling of events to those allowed by the current tier that Alameda County has been placed in by statewide metrics of number of cases; test positivity and lowest HPI quartile test positivity. Because we are restricting planning and operation of these events until we enter the tier allowed by the County, we do not anticipate having to cancel events at this time.
